In this workshop ADVANCE research team members Dr. Sandra Gahn and Jason Pontius will discuss the results of the AAUDE Faculty Satisfaction Survey administered at ISU in 2008.

An overview of general findings will be presented followed by discussion of areas specific to ADVANCE goals such as department cultures and values, work/life policies, differences expressed by gender, and areas of concern for STEM faculty.

Copies of the research report will be distributed and attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about the study.

"ISU ADVANCE Collaborative Transformation: Enhancing the Academic Work Environment"

The ISU Collaborative Transformation (CT) Project is a central component of the ISU ADVANCE Program. The CT Project helps faculty within focal Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) departments to identify potential barriers to faculty success and to develop departmental strategies to support excellence and diversity. A central objective of the CT Project is to ensure that department work environments support the recruitment, retention, and promotion of outstanding faculty.

This presentation and panel discussion will begin with a brief overview of departmental transformation efforts and accomplishments in three focal STEM departments.

Following the brief overview, a panel comprised of the three ISU ADVANCE Professors, Dr. Kristen Constant (MSE), Dr. Fred Janzen (EEOB), and Dr. Jo Anne Powell-Coffman (GDCB), who helped guide transformation efforts in the three focal STEM departments will engage in interactive dialogue with audience members.

Workshop on Faculty Search Resources

If you have or have heard about the CD that ADVANCE produced and distributed, but haven't had a chance to explore what is on it, or if you want to discuss ways to use the resources on the CD, come to this workshop. Topics that will be demonstrated and discussed are (1) best practices for candidate evaluation, (2) best practices during interviews, and (3) avoiding cognitive errors when evaluating candidates and reading letters of recommendation (4) facilitating the hiring process by making the best use of Iowa State University's electronic application system.

Attendees will choose two of the four topics to attend within the lunch hour. Leading the discussions of each topic will be ADVANCE College Equity Advisers Dr. Jan Thompson, Dr. Lisa Larson, and Dr. Chuck Glatz and Francesca Galarraga, Asst. Director of Equal Opportunity and Diversity Office.

While this information will be useful to all who evaluate applicants and P&T candidates, it will be of particular use to current members of search committees who will be able to focus on elements pertinent to particular stages of the search process. Feel free to bring your lunch; dessert and beverages will be provided.

Dr. Tarla Rai Peterson holds the Boone and Crockett Chair in Wildlife Conservation and Policy at Texas A&M University. She is the editor of the book, "Green Talk in the White House: The Rhetorical Presidency Encounters Ecology." Her research focuses on the intersections between communication, environmental policy and democracy. She will discuss the rhetorical strategies of 1Sky, a coalition dedicated to building a national movement for a set of comprehensive policies addressing climate change. Her lecture is part of the Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities Series "Sustaining the Earth."

"Centering the Human in Virtual and Augmented Reality: The Role of Psychophysics"

Dr. Roberta Klatzky is a professor of psychology and on the faculty of the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests are in human perception and cognition, with special emphasis on spatial cognition and haptic perception--recognizing objects through touch. Her work has application to navigational aids for the blind, exploratory robotics, teleoperation and virtual environments. Her lecture is part of the Human Computer Interaction Lecture Series.

Dr. Felicia Wu is an Assistant Professor of environmental and occupational health and adjunct professor in the Center for Bioethics and Health Law at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research interests include economics, risk analysis, risk communication and policy analysis applied to the areas of indoor air, food safety and biotechnology. Wu has received the National Institutes of Health Early Career Award. Her presentation is the annual Sigma Xi Lecture.

"The Impact of Groundwater Seepage on Coastal Ecosystems"

She travels widely to different shorelines, measuring and detecting chronic coastal pollution. Dr. Bonnie Glatz, ADVANCE Administrative Fellow (Spring 2008), will present guidelines and resources that she has gathered and prepared for conducting a faculty search, with emphasis on best practices for recruiting diverse candidates.

This lunchtime discussion will include a presentation of her observations and recommendations for faculty searches at Iowa State and an overview of the resources that she has provided on the ADVANCE Web page (http://www.advance.iastate.edu), including:

  • Information on unconscious bias and gender and racial schemas
  • Brief (1- to 2-page) guidelines for specific aspects of the search process
  • Questions to ask (or not ask) candidates and their references
  • Sample evaluation forms available in PDF or Word Document format
  • Short documents to facilitate discussion of unconscious bias
  • Forms to evaluate the search process
  • PowerPoint presentations that can be used by search committees and departmental faculty
