ADVANCE Collaborative Transformation Synthesis Report Workshop

ISU ADVANCE Spring Workshop - RSVP by March 25 to advance@iastate.edu
The Spring 2008 Workshop will focus on the ISU ADVANCE Program's Collaborative Transformation initiative, including findings from the first three focal departments, ways the findings can be used to enhance departmental workplace climate, and an overview of the next steps in the ISU ADVANCE Program. Presentations will be made by:
  • Dr. Susan Carlson, Associate Provost for Faculty Advancement & Diversity
  • Dr. Sharon Bird, Associate Professor, Sociology, and leader of the ADVANCE research team

The ADVANCE External Evaluators will meet with a variety of stakeholders including deans, department chairs, and key on-campus partners while at ISU. They will prepare a written report which will be used to strengthen and modify the ADVANCE Program.

Presenters will offer three perspectives on the issue and will discuss research on the gender-related issues of working in STEM disciplines, experiences with the challenges of recruiting women into STEM careers in business and industry, and the challenges and rewards of maintaining a STEM career in the academy. There will be plenty of time for discussion

"Practical Tools for Recognizing and Reducing Unintentional Bias"

ISU ADVANCE & College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Fall 2007 Workshop

The workshop will include: opening remarks from College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Wendy Wintersteen; a keynote presentation by Dr. Erin Kelly (Associate Professor of Sociology and co-investigator of the NIH-sponsored Flexible Work and Well-Being Center at the University of Minnesota); a "Readers Theatre", featuring ISU faculty talent; and a facilitated discussion and summary of best practices that can be implemented immediately to reduce the effects of unintentional bias.

Light refreshments will be served. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome.

"Diversity in the Worlds of Math, Science, and Engineering"

College of Engineering - lecture sponsored by COE Diversity Committee
Dr. James H. Johnson, Jr., Dean, College of Engineering, Architecure and Computer Sciences, Howard University, Washington, DC will share his perspective and insights on diversity in the area of higher education in the STEM fields: is diversity more than an external view? He will also share strategies for successfully attracting underrepresented groups in the STEM areas and partnering with minority-serving institutions.

STEM Department Chair Meeting

There will be an information sharing meeeting for STEM Department chairs on Monday September 24, 2007. During this meeting Dr. Jonathan Wendel, Dr. Ramesh Kanwar, and Dr. Ken Koehler will discuss their experiences from attending the University of Washington's LEAD workshop this past July. The LEAD workshop focused on departmental and university culture and the professional development of faculty in STEM disciplines. COACHE Survey Presentation

Dr. Cathy Trower, Director of COACHE (Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education) at Harvard University will be at Iowa State University on Monday, September 17th. She will be sharing information regarding the tenure-eligible faculty satisfaction survey administered at ISU during fall semester 2005. Dr. Trower will report to the university community on ISU's situation, putting the ISU data in a national context; this session is open to any interested member of the ISU community. See the COACHE web site for the COACHE report released in early August.
