ADVANCE e-Update: September 17, 2009

Welcome to the Fall 2009 semester and the beginning of the 4th year of the ISU ADVANCE Program. Highlights of upcoming activities this year include:

Theme for the year: ADVANCE-ing Faculty: Pathways to Promotion and Leadership

Dr. Annette O'Connor, Associate Professor in Veterinary Diagnostic & Production Animal Medicine, is the 2009-10 faculty fellow sponsored by ISU ADVANCE and the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. She is compiling resources and information regarding pathways to advancement, especially advancement from associate to full professor. She will present the results of her work at a workshop for the campus community in March, 2010.

Dr. Mary Harris, faculty fellow in 2008-09, will report on her work on faculty flexibility, which supported the theme for the ISU ADVANCE Program last year, "Recruiting the Best: The Role of Work-life Flexibility." Mary has prepared a Handbook on Faculty Flexibility at ISU for Deans and Chairs, which she will present at a special workshop for deans and chairs in early November. On November 17 she will lead a lunchtime discussion for the campus community, during which she will present resources that are available to ISU faculty.

  • National Academy of Sciences report on Gender Equity: panel discussion (details forthcoming)

Resources for Chairs and Deans on Flexible Faculty Careers at Iowa State, November 4, 8-9:30 am

ISU ADVANCE Lecture Co-sponsorship Program
ISU ADVANCE offers 10 lecture co-sponsorship ($300) awards each year. Departments and programs can apply for funds for the 2009-2010 academic year now and throughout the 2009-10 academic year until the funds are exhausted. Visit the lectures section of our Web site for more information.

has served as President of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, since 1992. His research and publications focus on science and math education, with special emphasis on minority participation and performance.

Dr. Rosalind Picard
is founder and director of the Affective Computing Research Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Laboratory, co-director of the Things That Think Consortium, and leader of the new and growing Autism Communication Technology Initiative at MIT.
