Kate Quinn is project director for Balance@UW, an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funded initiative to increase the flexibility of UW faculty careers. Her current research focuses on the ways in which higher education policy, climate/culture, and leadership interact to structure work/life balance for faculty and students. She has presented research findings and policy recommendations nationally and is published in

Sandra Gahn is a Senior Research Analyst in the Office of Institutional Research at Iowa State. She was instrumental in the development of the database used to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of Iowa State's flexible faculty career policies through funding from the Sloan Foundation. Sandy also serves as a co-PI on the Leadership Team for ISU's ADVANCE program where she provides research support and analyses of faculty data reported to the National Science Foundation. Sandy has more than 15 years of experience in institutional research and is currently helping to build Iowa State's data warehouse. Her research interests include faculty workload, salary and gender equity, and work/life balance issues.
Susan Carlson is Associate Provost for Faculty Advancement and Diversity at Iowa State University. She has led efforts to enhance the academic environment for Iowa State faculty, including new policies for promotion and tenure, new programs for flexible faculty careers and partner accommodation, and new approaches to part-time appointments for tenured and tenure-eligible faculty. She currently serves as the PI for the NSF-funded ISU ADVANCE Program to increase the diversity of STEM faculty. She also coordinates faculty recruitment and retention, mentoring and new faculty orientation, leadership training for department chairs, and university awards. Carlson leads the effort to develop a Flexible Career Database, which received a $25,000 award for innovative practices from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The database will be part of ISU's commitment to an integrated set of ISU policies that allow faculty to develop an individualized set of academic goals in accord with department practice and university policy.

Ann E. Austin is a Professor in the Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) program at Michigan State University. Her research interests concern organizational change and transformation in higher education, faculty careers, roles and professional development, the improvement of teaching and learning processes in higher education, and work and workplaces in academe. She has authored or co-authored numerous chapters, articles, and books, including Rethinking Faculty Work: Higher Education's Strategic Imperative (with J. M. Gappa and A. G. Trice, 2007).

Cathy A. Trower is co-principal investigator of the collaborative on academic careers in higher education (COACHE) at Harvard University. She has published numerous articles and several book chapters about faculty work life, and edited a book entitled
Policies on Faculty Appointment: Standard Practice and Unusual Arrangements (2000). Prior to coming to Harvard, she was a senior level administrator of business degree programs, and an adjunct faculty member, at Johns Hopkins University..
